Safe Spot 2020

The central elements in Safe Spot are a chair and a wheel, two objects reminiscent of a wheelchair, and since wheelchairs are used in cases of disability and illness the elements also represent loss and defect. At the same time wheels symbolize life and movement, and it is the combination of these two images (movement versus wheelchair) that like the artist’s other works, creates a sense of contradiction.

In this series chairs and wheels are combined in different forms, sometimes blending together to create a uniform whole with an intrinsic particular function, and other times producing collages of parts that do not quite fit together and cannot function as a real wheelchair. Yet both of these combinations refer to different aspects of loss while also signaling a sense of hope.

Another element that is used in this collection is horns. This element is used in the structures that are combined in a way that creates a uniform, functional whole. These objects that represent motion and continuation are like instruments for progress, and the horn is a piece of the instrument that makes it seem like it can proceed forward forever, as if the sound of the horn can remove any obstacle from the path without causing a momentary pause.
